The long way to fourth
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ten races ago, Hailey Bell was simply trying to establish herself in the Season 2 Kmart Auto Parts Series championship.
Today, she's the championship leader, mathematically guaranteed a place in the six-driver Chase and potentially just two points races away from securing the regular-season crown.
It's a remarkable reversal of fortune, built around one of the most significant points adjustments of the season.
The story begins with two other drivers.
Dean dominated the opening weeks, winning consecutive races at Daytona and Fontana. Jaxon then responded with back-to-back victories at Las Vegas and Circuit of the Americas, taking control of the championship.
Meanwhile, Bell's No. 15 StarClutch Racing Dodge slowly climbed the standings.
After opening seventh at Daytona, she fell to tenth following Fontana. By Las Vegas, she was back inside the provisional Chase field. At Michigan and Rockingham, she had climbed to fourth.
But she was still chasing.
The moment everything changed
On September 28 at Portland, Bell finished fourth and reached 223 championship points. Jaxon stood atop the standings with 310. Will had 288, and Carl had 236.
Then came the announcement that changed the championship.
Jaxon departed the series, and his 310 championship points were transferred to Bell.
Bell's official total jumped to 533. Fourth became first. A 65-point deficit to Will became a 245-point advantage.
It was an extraordinary opportunity, but the racing still had to continue.
Making the lead count
And Bell has made the most of the opportunity since.
At Martinsville, she earned another 33 points. At Talladega, she added 40 more. Across those two events, her 73 race-earned points outpaced every other eligible full-time championship contender.
Her lead over Will increased from 245 to 281.
The distinction between the official standings and Bell's on-track performance is important. Of her 606 official points, 296 were earned through competition and 310 came from Jaxon's transfer.
That adjustment created her enormous lead, but her recent performances have strengthened it.
A Chase berth secured. A first crown within reach.
Now the No. 15 team's first major achievement is official.
Hailey Bell has clinched her place in the Season 2 Chase for the Championship.
With seven regular-season points races remaining and a maximum of 65 points available per race, no driver currently outside the top six can accumulate enough points to overtake Bell's existing total.
But the bigger prize is still available.
Bell enters the upcoming Iowa race with a 281-point lead over Will. She cannot clinch the regular-season championship at Iowa, but Mexico City on November 9 presents the first mathematical opportunity.
If Bell can leave Mexico City with at least a 326-point advantage over every eligible rival, the regular-season championship will be hers with five races still remaining.
New Hampshire on November 16 offers another credible opportunity.
For a driver who was tenth after the season's second race, that's an extraordinary position to occupy.
For Bell, the opportunity is personal: this could be her very first regular-season championship. It has not been clinched yet.
The reset. And the road ahead.
Yet the bigger challenge comes later.
The Kmart Auto Parts Series resets its championship points before the six-race Chase. A regular-season championship would provide Bell with 2,100 starting points, 25 ahead of the second seed.
Her enormous current advantage would disappear.
Six races, beginning at Darlington and ending at Homestead-Miami in January, would decide the overall title.
Jaxon's departure may have fundamentally altered Bell's championship trajectory. But she will still have to turn that opportunity into the biggest achievement of her season.
For now, Bell arrives at Charlotte for the O'Reilly Auto Parts All-Star Race with a guaranteed Chase berth, the championship lead and the possibility of claiming the regular-season crown before Thanksgiving.
03 / The first crown is still ahead
The berth is hers. The title isn’t.
October 26 · Charlotte All-Star: an exhibition, with no championship points. It is not a points checkpoint on this chart.

How the math works
Each points race offers at most 65 points. Seven remaining races offer 455. The highest driver currently outside the six-driver Chase, Trent, has 125; even reaching 580 cannot catch Bell’s existing 606. This secures her berth under the supplied eligibility and roster rules.
An outright regular-season clinch needs a lead greater than all remaining points over every eligible rival. Thresholds: 391 after Iowa, 326 after Mexico City, 261 after New Hampshire, 196 after Charlotte. Ties require separate tiebreakers; they are not treated as clinches here.
After Portland’s transfer, Bell earned 33 + 40 = 73 points; Will added 0 + 37 = 37. Her lead grew by 36, from 245 to 281. Will did not participate at Martinsville; that flat checkpoint is not a zero-point finish.
At Mexico City, Carl must also remain beyond reach: his gap to Bell is currently 339, so he can gain at most 13 over Iowa and Mexico for a 326-point margin to hold. Beating Will alone is not sufficient.
Chase seeding resets to 2,100 / 2,075 / 2,065 / 2,060 / 2,055 / 2,050. Six drivers contest six races with no eliminations. There is no automatic win-and-in. Chase qualification is secured; the regular-season and overall championships remain undecided.
